Everyone experiences stress at different times in their lives. There are so many reasons one could feel stressed, such as schoolwork, issues with friends and family, work-related problems and more. However, it is essential to know how to manage our stress levels in order to make it through every day.

Healthline recently learned that stress could be biological too. Endocrinologist, Hans Selye, identified and documented stress in the late 1950s. Symptoms of stress were discovered before Seyle. His research helped to find ways for millions to deal with stress.

Here are a few ways to beat the stress and get through your day.

Find 5 minutes a day to meditate.

Sit with your back straight up in a quiet environment. This can be on the floor or on a chair. It would be best if you tried to clear your mind of any stressful thoughts and relax your body while doing this. Count up until five and then back down to zero. While you are doing this, slowly take deep breaths in and out.

Eat as healthily as possible.

The body and mind are fuelled by nutritious food. We must pack our intake with lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Plan your meals in advance and avoid sugary snacks. Fish is also high in omega-3 fatty acids, which curbs stress symptoms.

Eating healthy and exercising go hand-in-hand. You can get your blood pumping by taking a short walk in your office or even just standing up to stretch. Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates are mindful activities that can prevent stress through physical and mental exercises. Try to find a class that can be taken at least once a week.

A warm shower or bath reduces stress

Warm water can really add to your relaxation. Add essential oils to your bath. This will help you to relax even more.

Drink herbal tea

At a hot temperature, herbal tea can add positively to the start or end of your day. Chamomile or mint flavours are favourites. Herbal teas are also enjoyed when sweetened with honey.

Avoid caffeine and energy drinks as it spikes blood pressure and activates your hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-axis. Green tea consists of healthy oxidants and half the amount of caffeine that coffee has. It also contains an amino acid that calms the nervous system down.

Get a massage once a month

Massages help to release a lot of tension. A lot of our stress sits on our shoulders or neck. Ask a friend or family member to rub your tight, tense areas if you are unable to afford a professional massage therapist.

Sleeping properly is essential

Try to sleep at least 8 hours a night, and Short naps are helpful too. These can be as long as 30 minutes. It will assist you with feeling energised during the day.

Lack of sleep causes stress, and it gets worse over time. Turning off your TV and dimming the lights prepares you to relax before actually going to sleep.

Find a reason to laugh

Endorphins are released when laughing. This improves our mood and even decreases adrenalin. Laughing really helps with calming your stress responses. Spend time with a funny friend. Watch a comedy and let the laughter cool you down, and enjoy your day.

Speak about stress to a friend or family member

Talking to someone else about your problems is a stress reliever. It is crucial to find someone that you can trust. After that, set up a time to talk and allow yourself to share openly. This action adds to a healthy lifestyle. Speaking to a professional will also help to find and practice ways in which to cope with stress. A reassuring voice is able to bring upon a new perspective in troubling times.

Listening to music is therapeutic

A stressful situation can quickly disappear when listening to relaxing music. Calm music is a positive treat for our bodies and brain. It can reduce the cortisol hormone, which is linked to stress. Music can also lower blood pressure. Classical music or sounds of the ocean and nature have relaxing effects.

Get the stress treated by a professional

We cannot avoid stress, unfortunately. But we can learn more about stress relief. Untreated anxiety can potentially lead to physical and mental health problems. Stress is manageable with patience and other helpful strategies that we can educate ourselves on.

When the stress gets unbearable, seeking medical help is the best thing to do. Whether the manifestation is physical or emotional, you can go to your doctor or nearest clinic and find an option for medication and other interventions that are right for you.
