Education on health promotion and prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDs, Teen pregnancy, Smoking and Drug and Alcohol abuse.
High Risk
The ages between 14 and 24 are tumultuous. Adolescents deal with all sorts of bodily changes and ever-changing hormones. Usually, people assume that young children are the only ones who need constant medical attention and check-ups, but the truth is that adolescents and young adults deal with other problems like STD’s, sexual concerns and other things they may feel uncomfortable speaking about their parents. Having access to professionals who will keep their concerns confidential and can give accurate and helpful advice is important.
The US Department of Health and Human Services emphasises this point, saying; as authority figures in adolescents’ lives, parents or caregivers and providers can dominate healthcare visits. One-on-one conversations help adolescents learn how to conduct a conversation independently with a figure of authority and also lets healthcare providers screen for and discuss sensitive topics with adolescents, such as substance abuse, mental health disorders, and sexual activity.
