Diabetes is a common condition. This lifestyle disease must be managed by a healthcare professional along with medication, proper eating habits and exercise.

Staying on a strict lifestyle plan during the holiday season may seem daunting. Still, with a few adjustments to the menu and itinerary, you can enjoy your holidays safely without repercussions.

What Is Diabetes?

There are three types of diabetes; Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune condition whereby the body’s defence system destroys the cells that naturally create insulin, resulting in the need for an external insulin source to regulate blood sugar levels.

Type 2 diabetes develops gradually over the years due to poor diet and lack of exercise, amongst other factors. Eventually, the body becomes resistant to insulin, resulting in rising blood sugar levels.

Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy. It presents as high glucose levels and resolves once you have given birth. If you develop this while pregnant, you have a higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

Plan Your Meals

Planning your meals will help you manage your sugar intake.

  • Make sure to eat enough in the morning to stay satisfied until lunch, as this will help you to avoid snacking. It will also contribute to a stable blood-sugar level.
  • Eat a breakfast containing low GI foods, which slowly release energy.
  • Instead of indulging in sugary drinks like orange juice, keep a water bottle with you.
  • If you are eating at a restaurant, check their menu in advance. This will help guide your meal options for the rest of the day.
  • Always keep a healthy snack in your bag if your blood sugar levels drop unexpectedly.

Test Your Blood Sugar More Often

A world diabetes day article on News 24 says when you eat different foods and eat off schedule during the holidays, it is best to test your blood sugar every two hours. Before eating and before and after any form of exercise.

Keep Active

Pay attention to your exercise routine. Schedule in exercise, walking is the most accessible form of exercise during the holiday season. Make it a social event, and invite your friends and family.

That way, you get everyone involved and get your heart pumping!

Did you know that exercise can lower blood glucose levels for up to 48 hours?

Here’s how;

  • It increases insulin sensitivity, so your muscle cells use available insulin to take up glucose during and after activity.
  • When our muscles contract, our cells take up glucose and use it for energy, whether or not there is insulin.

So you aren’t just managing your diabetes long-term by sticking to your routine but giving yourself more energy to enjoy the holiday season too!
